Weather and seasons in southern Costa Rica: when to visit and buy
The South Pacific is one of the greenest parts of Costa Rica because it rains a lot. Knowing the seasons helps you visit, buy and build at the right time.
Dry season: December to April
Sunny days, easier roads and more visitors. This is when rental demand peaks and the best time for building work and earthworks.
Rainy season: May to November
Usually sunny mornings and afternoon rain, with the wettest months in September and October. It is the best time to see a property "for real": drainage, road condition, swollen rivers.
Whale season
Humpback whales come to Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita in two seasons: southern-hemisphere whales from July to November and northern ones from December to April.
Practical tips
If you buy a car, think 4x4 for gravel roads in the rainy season. Before buying a house, visit it at least once after heavy rain.
